Hardware Tech Note - Running An Older Processor? Processors earlier than Athlon 64, or
Intel Pentium 4? This issue only has an effect on older processors listed below AMD CPUs earlier than Athlon 64, including all Socket A-based CPUs Intel CPUs earlier than Pentium 4
With the release of X4 this passed month came a new leap in technology giving our customers greater speed at generating programs on their PC. With this leap we have found that older computer processors have difficulty running Mastercam X4, specifically AMD CPUs earlier than Athlon 64, including all Socket A-based CPUs or Intel Pentium 3 processors.
The cause of this problem is the lack of the SSE2 instructionset on the processor(CPU). The system files installed with Mastercam X4 requires SSE2, and will cause Mastercam to crash if the CPU does not support it. Currently there is a work around that enables Mastercam to run but in doing so slows the speed of Mastercam in accordance to the processors output. As with anything in computers there is a shelf life, in the near future Mastercam will no longer support these processors as they will become a hindrance to the user by affecting the overall performance of the software.
It is Services Four Automation's recommendation that our customers look at replacing these aging computers so that they can get the best possible performance out of Mastercam. If you have one of these processors or any questions about this please don't hesitate to contact Services Four Automation at 978-728-0009
